Fun with Cans

Americans have earned more than $25 billion by recycling aluminum beverage cans

Did you know that....

  • Aluminum can recycling began in 1970
  • According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), cans represent 0.4% of the nation’s solid waste stream
  • The aluminum can industry makes up to 20 times more cans with recycled material using the same amount of energy as it takes to make cans from virgin material
  • Approximately 100 billion aluminum beverage cans are produced each year in the US
  • There are more than 170 can manufacturing plants in 36 states in the US
  • The aluminum beverage can is made of two pieces- the can body and the can end (lid)
  • Approximately 33 cans can be produced from a pound of aluminum
  • The coils of aluminum used typically weigh about 25,000 pounds
  • The coils when rolled out can be 20,000 to 30,000 feet long and 5 to 6 feet wide
  • If each consumer in the US recycled one more can per week, there would be 15 billion cans recycled
  • Aluminum is also one the world’s most plentiful metals and is extremely lightweight Aluminum is corrosion resistant and has a high strength to weight ratio (one third the density of steel) It is FDA/ NSF approved
  • It is non conductive and non magnetic and provides ease of fabrication and formability
